Achieve Your Goals Faster by Letting Go Of These Beliefs

The first thing you need to do to achieve your goals is to make a decision. Decide what you want and that you will do what it takes to get them. When you do, will you start taking the necessary action steps, and will soon realize how much setting up constructive habits will help getting you there quicker. But that is just the beginning of what it will take for you to achieve your goals faster.

There are many behaviors you should consider adopting while pursuing your goals. What many don’t talk about, however, is how many of your current beliefs and behaviors you need to quit.

If you’re an entrepreneur like me, it is necessary that you let go of things holding you back in order to find success. Just like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, we must leave our old shell and breakthrough with our new improved selves so we can take flight.

What To Let Go of To Achieve Your Goals Faster

Whether you are an entrepreneur or not, the process of personal transformation to achieve your goals will require you to let go of the following list of beliefs and behaviors:

Beating Yourself Down

If you are in the habit of beating yourself down for every mistake you made, that feeds your feelings of regret. Regret is like a heavy chain that you carry everywhere with you that slows you down. When trying to achieve big goals, climbing those big mountains will be much more arduous while carrying feelings of regret.
It’s time to stop beating yourself down and learn to forgive yourself. You can’t change the past, all you can do is fix what you broke where you can, and move on. You can’t progress towards future goals when you are constantly looking back.

Holding Limiting Beliefs

Since you were little, you learned certain beliefs from caregivers and the world around you that you have been carrying around that don’t serve you anymore. Things such as you are not capable, not good enough, not smart enough, or not persistent enough to go after what you want. You can achieve your dreams even if you have no connections, no money, no degree, and no experience.
As long as you have the desire and motivation to reach your goals, you can be successful. Everything you need to support your achievements will come to you in time.

Worrying About What Others Think

When you reach for the stars, don’t be surprised if people tell you to sit back down. They’ll do it alleging to be looking out for your best interests, but it is mainly a reflection of their pain for not following their own dreams. Instead of focusing on the discouragement other people will bring you, focus on the inspiration you will represent to others who are ready to follow their own dreams. You may just be the example they had been waiting for.
Your courage to follow your dreams will shine bright to those who were just expecting a sign to jump in the same boat as you. Be proud of that.

Procrastinating

Time can never be recovered, and if you can compare time with money, procrastinating would be like throwing money in the garbage – except you can always recover money, but you can never recover time.
In that sense, procrastination is a destructive behavior you need to identify and eliminate if you want to achieve your goals. One way to beat procrastination is to go back to why you want to reach a certain goal, and feel motivated enough about it again to start taking actions. Even small actions, on a daily basis, will be enough to give you momentum. Remember: progress, not perfection.

Being a Perfectionist

Tightly connected to procrastinating, as we mentioned above. Waiting for every star to align so you can get started or finished with something leads to inaction. And we would like to remind you that most successful people did not wait for everything to be perfect to make progress. Not even Apple waited for the perfect version to launch the iPhone. Far from it!
Perfectionism is only good for keeping you where you are, and is a great habit to drop. No one is perfect and no one is expecting you to be, with a few exceptions (say you’re a heart of brain surgeon). Give yourself some grace.

Blaming Others

Not taking responsibility for your actions or lack thereof is not a behavior you will find in common with most successful people. That is called making excuses, and while you’re making excuses, you are justifying being stuck.
Until you decide you won’t let your own excuses stop you from following your dreams, you will have no progress. Stop blaming others. The stories you tell yourself can either hold you back or launch you ahead.

Focusing On What’s Lacking

According to the laws of the universe, the more you focus on something, the more of it you will receive. If you focus on being grateful for all the things you have in your life now, that’s more of what will get. If you focus on what you are missing, you will just extend the “missing”. Instead, daydream on how good if will feel when you have it.
Most people focus on what they want but through the lenses of “lack”. If you truly want to live a successful life, you may want to start focusing on what you want, and not on what you “don’t have”.

Comparing Yourself To Others

When you have a goal in mind and you see people around you achieving similar goals, how does that make you feel? Happy for them? Jealous? Angry that it is not you? If it’s one of the two latter ones, first acknowledge it is a normal reaction. Then, remind yourself they are in different paths, and you are probably making a lot of assumptions.
They probably started on this journey before you did, probably faced as many or more challenges than you, and you have no way of knowing by looking at their social media pictures. They don’t represent anyone’s reality, for that matter.
Just know that everyone is reaching their goals at their own pace, and you should only try to improve on yesterday’s version of you.

With those said, how many did you identify with? Will you make a conscious effort to let go of these? We wish you all the success you are looking for.

  1. Great post! These are all great ideas, but comparing yourself to others is the one I struggle with the most. I always think I should be farther/better etc and need to just be proud of where I am at and stay in the moment.
